https://ojs.unsulbar.ac.id/index.php/ilere/article/view/3901

Writing is a critical skill for English language learners, enabling them to express ideas effectively. This study investigates the narrative writing abilities of second-grade students at SMPN 5 Wonomulyo, Indonesia, focusing on five key aspects: content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. Employing a mixed-method approach, data were collected through writing tests and teacher interviews. The findings reveal that a majority of students (60%) failed to meet the minimum standard of writing proficiency. Content and vocabulary were identified as the most challenging aspects, with many students struggling to generate coherent ideas and use appropriate language. Interviews with the teacher highlighted contributing factors, including limited vocabulary, lack of practice, and reliance on conventional teaching methods. The study emphasizes the need for innovative, student-centered approaches to enhance narrative writing skills, such as collaborative writing exercises, peer feedback, and digital storytelling tools. Vocabulary enrichment and regular writing practice are also critical for improving performance. This research contributes to the body of knowledge on EFL writing and offers practical recommendations for improving teaching practices.
Yulianti Yulianti, Umar Umar, Putu Wahyu Sudewi, Adi Isma

https://ojs.unsulbar.ac.id/index.php/ilere/article/view/3915

Slang represents a dynamic and informal aspect of language, often reflecting cultural identity and creativity. This study examines the types and meanings of slang words used in six episodes of the Wednesday series (2022), aiming to explore their linguistic and pedagogical significance. Using a qualitative descriptive approach based on Miles and Huberman’s content analysis framework, the study categorizes slang words into four types: coinage, blending, clipping, and acronyms. Coinage emerged as the most frequently used type, contributing to the series' authenticity and narrative depth, while blending, clipping, and acronyms provided linguistic variety. The findings highlight the potential of popular media as a resource for EFL learning, offering learners exposure to authentic informal communication. Slang enhances vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, and cultural understanding, making it a valuable tool for bridging formal education and real-world language use. However, the study’s scope is limited to six episodes, leaving room for future research to explore additional contexts and pedagogical outcomes. This research underscores the relevance of incorporating media into language instruction, providing practical insights for educators and learners. By analyzing the interplay between slang and media, the study contributes to applied linguistics and supports innovative approaches in EFL pedagogy.
M. Arjun Khoirudin Firmansyah, M. https://ojs.unsulbar.ac.id/index.php/ilere/article/view/4544

This research aims to explore the use of speech acts in Ethel Cain's Strangers and Sun Bleached Flies from her acclaimed album Preacher's Daughter. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design that focuses on the analysis of Searle's speech act classification—declaratives, representatives, directives, expressives, and commissives—to uncover how Cain conveys complex emotional narratives related to trauma, identity, and familial relationships. This research uses library research to collect data from the lyrics of two of Ethel Cain’s selected songs, Strangers and Sun Bleached Flies. The data analysis process aligns with typical approaches in speech act analysis within linguistics, particularly in contexts where John Searle's taxonomy is applied to literary or artistic works like song lyrics. The findings reveal that speech acts are very useful for deciphering the complex meaning of music lyrics and suggest that Cain's nuanced use of language not only enhances the emotional depth of her music but also invites listeners to engage with themes of vulnerability and resilience. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of contemporary songwriting as a form of expressive communication.
Muthia Amalia Syahrir, Muhammad Hasbi

https://ojs.unsulbar.ac.id/index.php/ilere/article/view/4118

Advertising serves as a key medium for promoting products, often conveyed through posters, images, or videos. The language and visuals in advertisements significantly shape consumers’ perceptions of the product's effectiveness. This study examines the verbal and non-verbal signs in L'Oréal Paris skincare video advertisements, using a qualitative approach supported by Saussure's semiotic theory and Barthes' framework on connotation and denotation. Data were analyzed through observation and interpretation to uncover how advertisements convey meaning. The findings reveal that the representation of beauty in L'Oréal Paris advertisements transcends skin tone, emphasizing the ideal of flawless skin. Models of diverse skin tones are consistently presented, showcasing a universal aspiration for radiant, blemish-free, and well-maintained skin. The study highlights how both verbal elements, such as slogans and product descriptions, and non-verbal cues, including colors, visuals, and models, contribute to crafting a compelling message. This research provides insights into how semiotics enhances the communication of beauty ideals, offering implications for advertising strategies aimed at inclusivity and universal appeal.
Ni Luh Putu Andika Wahyuni, Putu Nur Ayomi

https://ojs.unsulbar.ac.id/index.php/ilere/article/view/4337

This study investigates the effectiveness of interactive learning methods; playing, singing, and storytelling in enhancing linguistic intelligence among early childhood learners in English language settings. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with teachers and parents, and field notes. The findings reveal that interactive methods significantly improve children's engagement, vocabulary acquisition, and ability to construct simple sentences. Activities such as singing and storytelling not only boost verbal responses but also build children's confidence in using English both in and outside the classroom. Parents observed enhanced communication skills and self-confidence at home. Additionally, these methods contributed to cognitive development, fostering critical thinking and creativity. The study concludes that interactive English learning activities are instrumental in fostering linguistic intelligence in early childhood while providing a strong foundation for future academic and communication skills. Recommendations for integrating these methods into preschool curricula are provided, highlighting their potential for global adaptation in early language education.
Gumarpi Rahis Pasaribu, Rani Arfianty, John Bunce
