Abstract

The emergence of digital diplomacy among world governments began with the industrial revolution marked by the birth of social media platforms such as twitter, facebook and other social media accounts. The President of the Republic of Indonesia and other state actors also implement social media as a means of diplomacy and publication to increase Indonesia's nation branding. The purpose of this study is to determine the strategies and challenges faced by the Indonesian government in using social media as a digital diplomacy tool. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method that describes the data obtained using literature study data collection techniques through books, journals, theses and relevant documents. Then in this study using the concept of nation branding and digital diplomacy in formulating the data found so as to get conclusions and results that are in accordance with the research objectives. The result of this study is to find out the strategy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia with several ministries in using social media such as twitter, facebook, instagram and youtube as a form of communication, diplomacy and tourism marketing so as to increase Indonesia's nation branding at the local and global levels. Then the challenges faced include: first, hashtag diplomacy which is used to protest so as to influence public views on government policies. Second, cyber-crime which refers to data hacking so that it can harm the confidentiality of state data. Third, Hoaxes or the spread of incorrect information that can harm social media users. This is a challenge for the Indonesian government in using social media as a tool of digital diplomacy today.
