Abstract

Bababulo Village is predominantly inhabited by communities whose main livelihoods are fishing, farming, and small- to medium-scale goat farming. In recent years, several farmers who previously focused on goat husbandry have shown increasing interest in expanding into the horticultural sector, particularly shallot cultivation. At the same time, the village possesses abundant goat manure as an agricultural by-product. However, its utilization remains suboptimal, as most of the manure accumulates around animal shelters, creating potential environmental pollution. Goat manure is rich in essential macronutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which play a vital role in improving soil fertility and promoting plant growth. This community service program was designed to enhance community knowledge and skills in processing livestock waste, reduce environmental pollution, lower agricultural production costs through the use of self-produced organic fertilizer, and create new business opportunities based on organic fertilizer production. Specifically, the program aimed to improve residents' knowledge and practical skills in converting goat manure into organic fertilizer. The program was implemented through several stages, including preparation, educational sessions, demonstrations of organic fertilizer production, hands-on practice by participants, group discussions, and evaluation using a pre-test at the beginning and a post-test at the end of the program. A total of 10 participants from the Bababulo Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) took part in the activities. The educational intervention resulted in a significant improvement in participants' knowledge. The mean pre-test score was 45.00, indicating a relatively low level of initial knowledge. Following the educational sessions, demonstrations, and practical training, the mean post-test score increased to 84.00, representing an 87% improvement in knowledge. The effectiveness of the intervention was further confirmed by the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, which showed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.002). Overall, the program demonstrated positive outcomes, including enhanced community capacity in managing livestock waste, reduced environmental pollution, improved soil fertility, and a strong commitment among participants to continue producing organic fertilizer independently. Therefore, this initiative is expected to support sustainable agricultural development while serving as an initial step toward establishing a community-based organic fertilizer production enterprise in Bababulo Village.
