Author Guidelines

The Indonesian Journal of Educational Science (IJES) welcomes original and high-quality manuscripts addressing contemporary issues, developments, and innovations in education. Authors must ensure that their manuscripts comply with the journal’s focus and scope, publication ethics, and formatting requirements.

Manuscripts that do not conform to these guidelines may be returned to the authors before entering the peer-review process.

1. General Requirements

Manuscripts submitted to IJES must meet the following requirements:

  • The manuscript must be original and must not have been previously published.

  • The manuscript must not be under consideration by another journal at the time of submission.

  • The manuscript must fall within the focus and scope of IJES.

  • The manuscript must be written in clear and academically appropriate English.

  • The manuscript must demonstrate originality, methodological rigor, and a meaningful contribution to educational knowledge or practice.

  • The manuscript must follow the official IJES article template.

  • Authors must comply with the journal’s publication ethics and research integrity policies.

  • All listed authors must have reviewed and approved the submitted manuscript.

2. Types of Manuscripts

IJES accepts scholarly manuscripts in the field of education, including:

  • original research articles;

  • research and development studies;

  • theoretical or conceptual articles;

  • systematic literature reviews;

  • scoping reviews;

  • meta-analyses; and

  • interdisciplinary studies related to education.

Review manuscripts must employ a clear, systematic, transparent, and academically recognized review method.

3. Language

Manuscripts must be written in English. Authors are responsible for ensuring the grammatical accuracy, clarity, readability, and academic quality of the manuscript.

Authors whose first language is not English are strongly encouraged to have their manuscripts reviewed by a qualified language editor or proficient English speaker before submission.

The editorial team may make minor corrections related to spelling, punctuation, formatting, and sentence structure. Substantial language editing remains the responsibility of the authors.

4. Manuscript Format

Manuscripts must be prepared according to the following requirements:

  • File format: Microsoft Word;

  • Paper size: A4;

  • Font: Times New Roman;

  • Font size: 12 points;

  • Line spacing: 1.5 for the main text;

  • Abstract spacing: single spacing;

  • Manuscript length: 10–15 pages;

  • Title length: no more than 20 words; and

  • Abstract length: no more than 300 words.

The manuscript length includes tables, figures, acknowledgements, declarations, and references. Authors must use the official IJES template and should not modify its margins, heading styles, spacing, or other layout settings.

5. Manuscript Structure

The manuscript should be organized in the following order:

Title

The title must be concise, specific, informative, and accurately reflect the main content of the study. It should not exceed 20 words.

Unnecessary abbreviations, formulas, locations, and phrases such as “A Study of” or “An Analysis of” should be avoided unless essential to the meaning of the title.

Authors and Affiliations

The full names of all authors must be written without academic or professional titles. Each author’s institutional affiliation must include the department or study program, institution, city, and country.

The corresponding author must be clearly identified and provide an active email address. Authors are encouraged to include their ORCID identifiers.

The names, affiliations, email addresses, and other information entered into the OJS metadata must correspond exactly with the information provided in the manuscript.

Abstract

The abstract must be written in English as a single paragraph and must not exceed 300 words. It should briefly describe:

  • the background or research problem;

  • the objective of the study;

  • the research method;

  • the principal findings; and

  • the main conclusion or implication.

The abstract must not contain citations, tables, figures, uncommon abbreviations, or information that is not discussed in the main manuscript.

Keywords

Authors must provide three to five keywords representing the main concepts of the study. Keywords should be specific, relevant, and useful for indexing and information retrieval.

Keywords should not merely repeat words already presented in the title.

Introduction

The introduction must clearly present the background of the study, research problem, relevant literature, research gap, novelty, and objective of the study.

The introduction should explain how the study differs from or advances previous research. It should not contain an excessively broad theoretical discussion or a separate literature review that is unrelated to the research problem.

The research objective or research question should be clearly stated at the end of the introduction.

Research Method

The research method must provide sufficient information to allow readers to understand, evaluate, and, where appropriate, replicate the study.

This section should explain:

  • the research design and approach;

  • research setting and period;

  • population, participants, or research subjects;

  • sampling or participant-selection procedures;

  • research instruments;

  • data-collection procedures;

  • validity, reliability, or trustworthiness procedures;

  • data-analysis techniques; and

  • ethical approval and informed-consent procedures, where applicable.

Authors using established methods should cite the original sources and explain any modifications made to those methods.

Results and Discussion

The results must be presented clearly, systematically, and in accordance with the research objectives or questions. Tables and figures may be used when they improve the clarity of the findings.

The discussion must interpret the findings rather than merely repeat the results. Authors should:

  • explain the meaning and significance of the findings;

  • compare the findings with relevant previous studies;

  • explain similarities or differences;

  • connect the findings with appropriate theories;

  • identify the academic or practical implications; and

  • acknowledge relevant limitations of the study.

Results and discussion may be presented as a combined section or in separate sections, provided that the organization remains consistent with the IJES template.

Conclusion and Recommendations

The conclusion must directly answer the research objective or research questions and summarize the study’s principal contribution.

The conclusion should not repeat the abstract or present new data, references, tables, or arguments that have not been discussed in the manuscript.

Recommendations may be included when they are directly supported by the findings. Authors may also identify implications for educational practice, policy, or future research.

Acknowledgements

Authors may acknowledge individuals or institutions that contributed to the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship.

Funding support, research assistance, institutional support, and other relevant contributions may be stated in this section.

Author Contributions

The contribution of each author should be explained transparently. Contributions may include conceptualization, methodology, investigation, data analysis, writing, visualization, supervision, project administration, and funding acquisition.

All listed authors must take responsibility for their respective contributions and approve the final version of the manuscript.

Funding Statement

Authors must identify all financial support received for the research and publication of the manuscript. The name of the funding institution and grant number should be provided where applicable.

When the research received no external funding, authors should state:

“This research received no external funding.”

Conflict of Interest

Authors must disclose any financial, institutional, professional, or personal relationships that could influence the research or its interpretation.

When no conflict of interest exists, authors should state:

“The authors declare no conflict of interest.”

References

The reference list must contain only sources cited in the manuscript. All sources cited in the text must appear in the reference list, and every source in the reference list must be cited in the manuscript.

6. Tables and Figures

Tables and figures must be placed within the manuscript immediately after the paragraph in which they are first mentioned.

Each table and figure must:

  • be numbered consecutively;

  • have a concise and informative title;

  • be mentioned and discussed in the main text;

  • use readable text and appropriate resolution;

  • include measurement units where relevant; and

  • identify the original source when adapted or reproduced.

Tables should be created using the table function in Microsoft Word and must not be inserted as images.

Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission to reproduce copyrighted tables, figures, photographs, instruments, or other materials.

7. Citations and References

IJES uses the American Psychological Association, Seventh Edition (APA 7th Edition) citation and reference style.

Authors are strongly encouraged to use reference-management software such as:

  • Mendeley;

  • Zotero;

  • EndNote; or

  • another compatible reference manager.

References should primarily consist of relevant primary sources, particularly peer-reviewed journal articles published within the last ten years. Older references may be used when they are seminal, theoretically important, or necessary to explain the historical development of the topic.

Authors may cite relevant articles previously published in IJES when they contribute directly to the manuscript. Citation of IJES articles is not mandatory and irrelevant or coercive citation is prohibited.

Digital Object Identifiers should be presented as active links using the following format:

8. Ethical Approval and Informed Consent

Research involving human participants must comply with applicable ethical and institutional standards.

Authors must state whether ethical approval was obtained and provide the name of the approving institution or ethics committee and approval number when available.

Informed consent must be obtained from participants or their legal guardians where required. Research involving children, students, persons with disabilities, or other vulnerable participants must provide additional ethical safeguards.

Authors must protect participants’ privacy, confidentiality, dignity, and personal information.

9. Originality and Similarity Screening

All manuscripts must be original and free from plagiarism, self-plagiarism, data fabrication, falsification, citation manipulation, and duplicate publication.

Submitted manuscripts may be examined using similarity-detection software. A high similarity score or indications of inappropriate text reuse may result in the manuscript being returned for revision or rejected.

Authors are responsible for correctly quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and acknowledging all materials obtained from other sources.

10. Use of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence tools cannot be listed as authors.

Authors who use artificial intelligence tools in writing, language editing, data processing, analysis, image production, or other stages of research must disclose the name of the tool and explain how it was used.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, citations, and ethical compliance of all AI-assisted content.

AI-generated information and references must be verified carefully. The use of AI must not violate confidentiality, privacy, copyright, intellectual property rights, or research ethics.

11. Submission Procedure

Manuscripts must be submitted electronically through the IJES online submission system. Authors must register or log in to the journal website and complete all submission steps.

During submission, authors must:

  • select the appropriate manuscript type;

  • complete all required manuscript metadata;

  • enter the names, affiliations, countries, and email addresses of all authors;

  • identify the corresponding author;

  • enter the title, abstract, and keywords accurately;

  • upload the manuscript in Microsoft Word format;

  • upload supplementary files where applicable; and

  • confirm compliance with the submission checklist.

The information entered in the OJS metadata will be used for indexing and publication. Authors are responsible for ensuring that all metadata are complete and accurate.

Submissions sent through personal email or unofficial communication channels should not replace submission through the OJS system.

12. Peer-Review Process

All eligible manuscripts will undergo an initial editorial assessment to evaluate their relevance to the journal’s scope, compliance with author guidelines, originality, and basic academic quality.

Manuscripts that pass the initial assessment will undergo a double-blind peer-review process. The identities of authors and reviewers will not be disclosed to each other during the review process.

Reviewers are selected based on their expertise and the subject matter of the manuscript. The editorial decision may be:

  • accept submission;

  • revisions required;

  • resubmit for review;

  • decline submission; or

  • submit elsewhere.

The Editor-in-Chief or assigned editor is responsible for the final decision based on the manuscript’s academic quality, reviewers’ recommendations, ethical compliance, and relevance to IJES.

13. Manuscript Revision

Authors receiving a revision decision must address all comments from editors and reviewers carefully and systematically.

The revised submission should include:

  • a revised manuscript;

  • a point-by-point response to reviewers; and

  • a clear explanation of any recommendation that was not followed.

Changes in the revised manuscript should be highlighted or tracked according to the editor’s instructions.

Authors must submit revisions within the specified period. Requests for additional time should be communicated to the editorial office before the revision deadline.

14. Proofreading and Publication

Accepted manuscripts will undergo copyediting, layout editing, and proofreading. The corresponding author will receive the final proof for verification before publication.

At the proof stage, authors should only correct typographical errors, factual inaccuracies, author information, and production-related issues. Substantial changes to the title, authorship, data, results, or conclusions are not normally permitted.

Authors must review and return the corrected proof within the period specified by the editorial office.

15. Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright in their published work. Articles published by IJES are made immediately available under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0).

This license permits users to read, download, copy, distribute, and adapt the work for non-commercial purposes, provided that appropriate credit is given to the authors and the original publication.

16. Submission Preparation Checklist

Before submitting a manuscript, authors must confirm that:

  • the manuscript is original and has not been published elsewhere;

  • the manuscript is not under consideration by another journal;

  • the topic is consistent with the focus and scope of IJES;

  • the manuscript follows the official IJES template;

  • the title does not exceed 20 words;

  • the abstract does not exceed 300 words;

  • three to five keywords have been provided;

  • the manuscript is between 10 and 15 pages;

  • the manuscript is written in clear academic English;

  • all citations and references follow APA 7th Edition;

  • all cited sources appear in the reference list;

  • tables and figures are placed in the appropriate parts of the manuscript;

  • all authors and affiliations have been entered correctly;

  • ethical approval and informed consent have been reported where applicable;

  • funding and conflicts of interest have been disclosed;

  • the use of artificial intelligence has been disclosed where applicable; and

  • the manuscript has been checked for plagiarism, completeness, and accuracy.
