Abstract

Iron-sand deposits in estuarine environments can show strong spatial variability due to sediment transport, hydrodynamic sorting, and differences in Fe-bearing particles. This study investigated the spatial distribution of mass-specific magnetic susceptibility and elemental composition of iron sands from the Mamberamo River estuary, Papua, Indonesia. Samples were collected from 40 locations, and magnetic susceptibility was measured using a Bartington susceptibility meter and mapped with QGIS. Five representative samples were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Susceptibility ranged from 44.43 × 10−8 to 2841.62 × 10−8 m3 kg−1, with the highest value at sampling point 21 near the river mouth. XRF showed Si and Fe as the dominant elements. Sample 21 also had the highest Fe content (42.56 wt%). The results indicate spatially heterogeneous iron-sand deposits and localized enrichment of magnetically responsive Fe-bearing particles.
